Secondary Science Curriculum

  1. Students learn science best by participating in scientific practices such as designing and carrying out investigations and arguing from evidence. They must also be able to communicate following the norms of the scientific community.
  2. Students who are proficient and literate in science understand the nature of scientific knowledge and scientific explanations.  Students will utilize this knowledge to solve problems and evaluate new scientific explanations and arguments based on evidence and reasoning.
  3. Students will gain an appreciation of the beauty and wonder of science as it relates to their everyday lives.

Explanation of Standards

In 2014 the Oklahoma State Legislature approved Oklahoma Academic Standards for Science (OAS-Science).  The OAS-Science standards are coherently and developmentally appropriate standards for kindergarten through grade twelve developed by professional educators and approved by Oklahoma legislators.

The Oklahoma Academic Standards include integration of scientific and engineering practices with core content from Physical Science, Life Science and Earth/Space Science.  The standards tell us what students are expected to learn in a specific course.  Yukon Public Schools uses these standards to guide curricular decisions.

Here is a video explaining the layout of the OAS-Science standards.

State testing in science occurs in 5th and 8th grades in the form of Oklahoma School Testing Program (OSTP) and in grade eleven the Science College and Career Readiness Assessment

On the national level, students can take science assessments for the ACT, SAT, Advanced Placement courses and many others.

At the high school level, Yukon students have the opportunity to take a variety of courses in sciences.  A.C.T. has identified the science college preparatory course sequence that contributed most to a student’s college readiness as biology, chemistry, and physics. Yukon Public Schools also offers AP courses that may allow students to earn college credit.
