Energy Management

Yukon Schools is PROUD that by working together , we have reached an energy cost avoidance of over $2,589,033 in our  NINTH year in our Energy Education and Conservation Program! We are currently at  25.5% (up from 24.4% last year)  Cost Avoidance.

This is equivalent to the following Cumulative Greenhouse Gas Reduction:

  • Energy Reduction Impact: 137,681  MMBTU
  • 17,927 equivalent metric tons of CO2
  • Passenger cars not driven for one year: 3,735
  • Tree seedlings grown for 10 years – 459,669

Yukon Public Schools Energy Guidelines For Teachers

All staff members are “energy savers” as well as “energy consumers”.  We must all work together to implement the energy conservation guidelines. 

Classroom doors should remain closed as much as possible when HVAC is operating.
Vestibule doors should remain closed.
All exhaust fans should be turned off at the end of each day and during unoccupied hours.
All office machines (copiers, laminating equipment, etc.) should be switched off each night and during unoccupied hours. Fax machines should remain on.
All computers, monitors, printers and speakers should be turned off each night. Network equipment is excluded.
Air Conditioning Equipment
Thermostats should be set no lower than 74 degrees.
During unoccupied times air conditioning equipment should be set back.
Heating Equipment
> Thermostats should be set no higher than 72 degrees.
> The unoccupied temperature setting shall be 55 degrees. We will adjust to 60 degrees during extreme weather.
> When there is no threat of freezing, heating equipment will be turned off each night.
> All unnecessary lighting in unoccupied areas will be turned off.
> Lights should be turned off in classrooms when leaving the classroom empty for more than five minutes.
> Gym lights should be turned off when not in use.
All lights should be turned off at the end of the day when students leave the building.Only necessary lighting in spaces being used should be on.

Energy Management Conservation Regulation We believe it to be our responsibility to ensure that every effort is made to conserve energy and natural resources while exercising sound financial management and maintaining the comfort and safety in occupied areas. While this isn’t always easy, YPS has found ways to substantially save on energy costs. This has resulted in resources being available for our districts biggest cost – PEOPLE. It is the joint responsibility of the Yukon Public Schools faculty, staff, School Board and administration; with its success based on cooperation at all staff and student levels. The district maintains accurate records of energy costs and conservation and will provide information on the goals and progress.

We audit devices for personal use such as mini refrigerators, coffee pots, microwaves, air fresheners and other electric devices consuming resources in YPS buildings. An “energy utility charge” will be implemented to offset the cost of personal electrical appliances in the classroom. Employees will be required to pay a usage fee for non –essential electronics.

  1. Faculty and staff are encouraged to consolidate the use of refrigerators and coffee pots, etc., to conserve energy and reduce requirement of charging staff for non-essential electronics.
  2. Personal appliances remain subject to, all “shutdown and unplug” requirements during long school closings: Professional Days Parent Teacher/ Conference three day weekends, Fall Break, Thanksgiving Break, Christmas Break, Spring Break and Summer Break. This will help ensure safety and cleanliness in YPS buildings.
  3. Building sites are audited during occupied, non-occupied, morning and afternoon transition hours, to provide information to principals on efficient energy usage of the building. Written energy audits are conducted monthly and conservation program outlines will be updated.
  4. A receipt and yearly dated PAID tag will be provided to place on your appliance after receipt of the annual fee. If a mini fridge is required because of medical needs, a copy of the prescription from your doctor is submitted to the Energy Education Specialist. a dated, medical tag will be provided.
  5. Paid checks for utility usage will be deposited into YPS General Fund to help defray the utility costs. Send checks made to Yukon Public Schools to Energy Education Specialist - Yukon Public Schools Administration Building.

Through a TEAM effort through better management of resources, we can achieve our goal. Together we can make a difference today and provide a brighter future for Yukon schools and community.

Item: Space Heaters Description: Space heaters will only be allowed as a verified medical necessity and must be less than 1000 watts. Cost Per Year: $60.00
